United Way recognizes that engaging volunteers is essential to accomplishing our mission to unite people and resources to improve lives and strengthen communities in Southwest Minnesota. In 2017, our organization received the direct benefit of more than 425 unique volunteers contributing 2,600 volunteer hours. Additionally, we matched countless volunteers with other opportunities at schools, non-profits and libraries. We are grateful to the people who ‘LIVE UNITED’ each and every day through volunteerism. We appreciate the time and talent you donate to our organization, as well as, the time and talent you donate to many other valuable organizations throughout our region.
National Volunteer Week 2018 was celebrated the week of April 15-21 and served as an opportunity to recognize those special people that make our communities thrive. Our organization has been celebrating the entire month of April as one week just wasn’t enough time to honor all of the people that make our good work possible and show our gratitude. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram to see some highlights of this special month.
The United Way of Southwest Minnesota has also made it easier than ever to find volunteer opportunities and connect people directly with a variety of programs, schools and organizations that need help across the region. Get Connected is an easy-to-use web-based platform that matches volunteers with appropriate opportunities. It is truly a one-stop shop for all things volunteer related! Users can search for needs based on their own interests, connect directly to the agencies that care about the same things they care about and find meaningful ways to give back. Area non-profits, schools and organizations can use the system to post volunteer need opportunities to a larger audience. Needs include both one time opportunities and on-going projects. The platform also features an event tab to post upcoming community happenings. There are currently more than 70 active agencies seeking volunteers; almost 600 active site users and more than 100 volunteer needs posted right now with 2+ new needs being added (on average) per week.
Interested individuals can go to UnitedWaySWMN.org and click on “Volunteer” to get started. Organizations in need of volunteers can go to the same location and look for the “Click Here to Register Your Organization” section to sign up their agency. The platform is free for both the volunteer user and the agencies, as the fee for hosting is covered by United Way of Southwest Minnesota.
