They’re back!! Fun in the Sun Kits were so popular last year that United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWSWMN) is excited to announce they’re here again! The goal of these kits is to provide a starting point for family activities that are fun, educational and engaging throughout the summer. These kits are a gift from UWSWMN to families in our service area that have young children and are distributed through local libraries.
Here are a couple responses we received when parents were asked this spring “What was your favorite part of the kits?” “Spending time with my daughter using the items.” “My kids loved the sidewalk chalk and the scavenger hunt - those were the first things they wanted. The book and craft project were perfect to pull out on a rainy day. It was nice to have a variety of things to do.” “I liked that it gave us some different activities to do outside that we didn’t normally do.” “Nature hunt!”
This year’s kits include: If You Give A Pig a Pancake book; sidewalk chalk; beach ball; foldable flying discs; scavenger and alphabet hunt cards; dry erase pen; color/shape activity cards; ideas on how to use the contents of the kit; and information on UWSWMN internal programs. Contents of the kits are targeted to 3 – 5 year old children to enjoy with their parent or guardian.
Hurry out to your local library to get your kit! Kits are available for pick-up on a first come first serve basis at most public libraries in our service area beginning on May 31. While you’re at the library, take time to enjoy some of the great books and activities that they have to offer. Our libraries are a gem in our communities. Thanks to the libraries in the following towns who have agreed to distribute kits this year: Balaton, Canby, Clarkfield, Cottonwood, Dawson, Fulda, Granite Falls, Hendricks, Ivanhoe, Lake Benton, Marshall, Slayton, Tracy, Tyler and Westbrook.
United Way of Southwest Minnesota is an autonomous, local organization working to create lasting change in people’s lives and the communities we serve in Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Yellow Medicine and portions of Cottonwood, Lac qui Parle, Nobles and Redwood counties of Minnesota.
